House leader wants probe into Wolf administration's actions on nursing homes, COVID No investigation has yet linked the administration's policies to the outbreak or deaths in nursing homes, and nursing home trade associations in Pennsylvania said they were not aware of a nursing home that was forced to accept a COVID-positive patient against its will, according to an Associated Press report earlier this month. Wolf's office has repeatedly said their recommendations mirrored federal guidelines. While the CDC said nursing homes could accept those patients, Republicans said Wolf made it mandatory. The CDC did say nursing homes could accept COVID-19 patients returning from hospitals, and Wolf and some other governors utilized that option to free up hospital beds.īut as the high rate of infections and deaths in nursing homes came into view, Republicans criticized Wolf for allowing those patients back into nursing homes. And, early on, masks had not yet been recommended in senior facilities or anywhere in the U.S. The same thing was happening in other states, as those facilities struggled through a shortage of personal protective equipment and COVID-19 tests. Long before masks were recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, flattening the curve was Wolf's main goal in the early days of controlling the spread of the coronavirus.īut a bigger problem was emerging in the state at a time when data wasn't publicly provided to track it: COVID-19 was disproportionately infecting and killing residents in Pennsylvania nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
